For this project, I decided to create candles and test them to see how aroma therapy works, I made four candles, and gave one to four different classmates, and told them to burn them while doing things they do in their regular schedule. I made a eucalyptus, a lavender, a rosemary, and a floral watery "rain" one. Melanie got the rain candle, she burned it while doing homework and exercising, she reported the next day saying that she felt focused, concentrated, and energized. Noah got the lavender scented one, he burned it while doing homework, making art pieces, and getting ready for bed. He said that it made him feel calm and at peace, and very relaxed. Lupe burned the eucalyptus candle when she was cleaning her room and doing other chores, she said it made her feel energetic, so she started to play happier more upbeat music while cleaning, and she finished them in a short amount f time too. And lastly, Sammy burnt the rosemary candle, she was doing your homework. She said that she felt a little stressed since she had a lot of assignments.
Now that I got the results, I wanted to research why each scent had each effect. According to the University of Maryland's medical researchers, lavender has soothing abilities because it slows the nervous system's activity. It is used for people with insomnia and anxiety disorders, so that's why Noah was calm and at peace while doing homework and getting ready for bed. The rain candle mostly contained notes of jasmine, jasmine is believed to have calming properties by most, so you might be confused when Melanie reported being concentrated and energized, but research has actually shown that jasmine promotes beta rhythms in the brain, which is associated with mental alertness and confidence. The fresh and earthy eucalyptus scented candle that Lupe burned increases brain wave activity and counters physical and mental fatigue, so that shows how she was able to complete her chores with energy to spare. Even though sammy was stressed out while doing her homework, the scent of rosemary is supposed to boost focus and concentration, so I'd guess she did a good job on her homework.
I think I got the desired results. i wanted to research the effects of different scents by making candles, and I was able to do so. I'm very proud of this project that a fleshed out, worked on, and actually achieved on my own.
I have a lot of leftover wax flakes and wicks, so I might make a few candles for myself if nobody uses them, but I do want to focus more of earth science next section, and see if any chemical reactions go on in plants, rocks, or gems. And more aromatherapy might be linked with the projects, since I'll be using a lot of different plants, and some might be aromatic.
I learned a lot about brain waves with this project, and also making candles is a pretty interesting thing to know how to do, I'm glad I did this project, I learned a lot from it.
